Overview

The UNDP-Milliman Global Actuarial Initiative (GAIN) is working with developing countries to manage climate risks by building actuarial capacity and deepening local insurance markets.

Resilient economies and societies need insurance, and insurance needs actuaries to quantify, price and manage evolving risks. But in many developing countries, the actuarial profession has just begun to develop. Many countries have only a few trained national experts. Improving actuarial capacity is key to building financial resilience through insurance.

UNDP and Milliman have rolled out GAIN in 12 countries, with detailed road maps currently being implemented in 8. The initiative will expand to cover 20 countries over the next few years.

Delivering
expertise

GAIN is delivering short-term actuarial capacity-building training, while also working on longer-term strategic policy changes. Actuarial professionals and academic leaders are receiving training and students are supported through mentorship programmes. GAIN is also helping regulators and the public sector develop in-house actuarial expertise and increase data availability to drive change. Under GAIN, over 4,000 pro bono consulting hours have been contributed to interventions driven by local stakeholders.
