Overview

Climate change is escalating risks for developing countries in the Arab States. From extreme weather, water scarcity and coastal erosion to agriculture losses and disease outbreaks, interconnected risks are jeopardizing economies, infrastructure, community health and social cohesion. Insurance and risk transfer present both solutions and opportunities. There is significant potential for the development of inclusive insurance and Takaful – a Sharia-compliant alternative to insurance.

UNDP is working with governments and industry across the Arab States to develop innovative protection solutions. Our initiatives are building resilience among vulnerable groups, strengthening institutional and industry capacity and creating the enabling environments needed to facilitate insurance market development and disaster risk management solutions.
