Overview

Small-scale farming produces 50% of the world’s food, represents the livelihoods of over 1.5 billion people and contributes up to 25% of GDP in developing countries. The climate crisis is profoundly impacting the global food system, yet less than 1% of climate finance flows to building the resilience of agrifood systems and smallholder farmers.

The clock is ticking to increase smallholder farmers’ adoption of climate adaptation measures, such as the cultivation of high-yield seed varieties or water conservation practices. The climate adaptation investments of over 500+ million smallholder farmers’ are vulnerable to climate shocks. Climate-related disasters have caused about $3.8 trillion worth of lost crops and livestock production over the past three decades globally, but 80% of smallholders cannot access formal insurance. This percentage is even higher in sub-Saharan Africa, where 97% lack formal insurance coverage.
