Current financial systems drastically undervalue the vital role nature plays in supporting economies and livelihoods. Yet over half of global GDP—around US $44 trillion annually—and 1.2 billion jobs depend on ecosystem services such as those provided by forests, coral reefs, and mangroves. Despite these dependencies, ecosystems are being degraded at unprecedented rates. This degradation undermines nature’s ability to buffer the impacts of climate change and disaster risks—potentially pushing over 100 million people into extreme poverty by 2030. Mangroves alone help protect $16.3 billion in coastal property and the livelihoods of millions each year, and in Latin America, ecosystem services provided by jaguar landscapes are estimated to contribute between $1.5-$4trillion to the regional economy.

Protecting and restoring ecosystems is therefore not only an environmental imperative but a critical economic strategy. It requires coordinated policy action, financial investment, and risk management tools. While private investment in nature remains limited, constrained by perceptions of high risk and financial uncertainty, insurance can incentivize large-scale financing for nature and help communities build financial resilience to rising risks.

This session will feature concrete examples of how insurance is enabling nature-based solutions, protecting biodiversity and supporting climate adaptation and resilience. It will explore the opportunity to build a public-private platform that leverages insurance to unlock nature finance at scale.
