Insurance and Risk Finance at COP28

IRFF at COP28

The 28th UN Climate Conference agenda has placed resilience and the protection of lives and livelihoods at the center of effective global climate action. Kicking off in the United Arab Emirates on November 30th 2023, COP28 also marks the conclusion of the first Global Stocktake (GST) – a critical assessment of global progress on meeting climate goals and outlining measures to bridge the gaps between growing climate risks and financial resilience.

UNDP’s Insurance and Risk Finance Facility (IRFF) is hosting a series of COP28 side events and discussions to accelerate solutions for financial resilience in partnership with governments and the insurance industry.

IRFF events and broader engagement at COP28 will focus on the following areas:

  • Financial resilience to climate and disaster risks
  • Climate adaptation for SMEs
  • Innovative insurance solutions including Takaful
  • Insuring nature to reduce risks

Accelerating SMEs’ Resilience in a World of Growing Climate Risks

Hosted by Generali in partnership with UNDP’s IRFF ︳This event, jointly organised by UNDP and Generali, will discuss sustainable development and climate adaptation for SMEs globally, and especially in Southeast Asia. Bringing together key stakeholders and experts - including representatives from the EU Commission, the Italian Government, and ASEAN governments.

Delivering Financial Resilience to Climate Risks through Takaful

Co-hosted by UNDP’s IRFF and Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) in partnership with IsDB Institute, UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Arab States (RBAS), Kuwait Finance House (KFH) and the Arab Gulf Program for Development (AGFUND) ︳This event will highlight the opportunity for Takaful (a shariah-compliant insurance alternative) to build the financial resilience of vulnerable communities, especially in countries with significant Muslim populations. A new IsDB and UNDP report on ‘Insuring a Sustainable Future: Building climate resilience through Takaful’ will be launched at the event, alongside commitments to further develop a global Alliance for Takaful.

Resilience Today, Resilience Tomorrow: Insuring Progress for Sustainable Development

Hosted by UNDP’s IRFF, Germany's federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation nd Development (BMZ) and Insurance Development Forum ︳The Tripartite Agreement between UNDP, the insurance industry, and the German government has been working with over 20 countries to build financial resilience to climate and disaster risks. This event will reflect on the journey of the Tripartite Agreement to date, including perspectives from governments, insurance industry and development partners on working together to address climate challenges. The event will also discuss future ambitions for such partnerships.

Responsible Digital Payments to Accelerate Climate Action
